2022
The Nerello Mascalese vines come from the Mt. Portella area, ~700m, 70+ year old vines — but the soil is marine sandstone, clay and quartz, not lava, which is why it's IGT Terre Siciliane rather than Etna Rosso DOC. Natural winemaking: spontaneous ferment in open vats, no temperature control, no added sulfur, ~15 days maceration, aged largely in concrete with a little old oak.
Lighter-framed, high-toned, saline and chalky, more linear than the volcanic soil wine. Open it 30–45 minutes early; no-sulfur wines can show reductive on the pop.
